The Apostolic Nunciature in Bangladesh

At the time of Creation of Bangladesh, Pope 6 was the head of the Vatican City state and the Catholic Church. His Concern for the new –born country and its insertion into international community promoted him to send a two –member delegation to represent the Holy See. They were Archbishop William A. Carew and Father Henri de Redmatten, O.P.

The Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Welcoming his gesture of solidarity expressed its desire t establish diplomatic relations with the Holy See. In result, the agreement between the two was announced in September 1972 and on the 2nd February of the following year. The Apostolic Nunciature (Embassy of the Holy See, Popularly known as the Vatican Embassy) was set Up In Dhaka.
His Holiness Paul 6 appointed Archbishop Edward Idris Cassidy the First Papal Representative to Bangladesh. He arrived in Dhaka on April 1973 and served up till 1979.
